Metzger, Lambert fall in semifinals
Punahou graduates Stein Metzger and Mike Lambert were upset by the team of Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal in the semifinals of the AVP Birmingham-Hoover Open yesterday in Alabama.
Gibb and Rosenthal defeated the top-seeded duo of Metzger and Lambert 21-14, 21-14 to advance to the final, where they then lost to Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser.
Hawaii boxers bring home medals
Mililani's Colleen Loo nearly claimed two division titles at the Women's Golden Gloves National Tournament over the weekend, taking home a gold and a silver from the event in Hollywood, Fla.
Loo, a member of PearlSide Boxing Club, was granted the 101-pound division championship by walkover. She moved up to light flyweight (106) and lost to Marlen Esparza of Houston 4-1 in the final on Saturday.
Chanelle Valdez of Waipio Gentry also won a silver medal by placing second in the light-heavyweight (176-pound) division. She was stopped by Chatiqua Hemingway of Pittsburgh in the second round of the title bout.
Loo defeated Rochelle Gilken 3-2 in the semifinals on July 13. Valdez advanced to the final when Kindra Brewton of North Carolina retired in the third round of their semifinal match.
Sun places fourth at Janet Evans meet
Iolani graduate Hongzhe Sun finished fourth in the 100-meter backstroke on the final day of the Janet Evans Invitational at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium.
Sun posted a time of 56.63 seconds in the race to place fourth behind Stanford teammate Peter Marshall (55.35). He won the 200-meter backstroke Friday with a time of 2 minutes, 53 seconds.
Okino, Hilea win ESPN qualifier
Cyd Okino and Jaclyn Hilea teamed to shoot 6-under 66 yesterday to claim a win in yesterday's ESPN National Golf Challenge qualifier at Turtle Bay's Arnold Palmer Course.
Also advancing to the regional finals set for Aug. 27 were the teams of Sam Rodriguez and Haku Maluenda (69) and Sergio Meneses and Abel Soares (70). Clifford Nishikawa and Henry Fujita won the net division with a 61.
