Island Movers shut out Asai Gakuin

Daniel Payne and Brandon Muser combined on a five-hit shutout in the Hawaii Island Movers' 1-0 win over Asai Gakuin yesterday in Sapporo, Japan.

Michael Lam scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Island Movers (2-2-1). Payne struck out eight and walked none over eight innings. Muser pitched one inning of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Local surfers survive at longboard event

Three surfers from Hawaii advanced to the fourth round of the inaugural Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championship yesterday in Biarritz, France.

Joy Magelssen and Crystal Dzigas won their third-round heats to advance. Janna Irons also moved on by placing second in her heat. The event is expected to resume tomorrow.

Ching, Oride win junior championships

Alex Ching of Honolulu shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to win the boys title, and Kelli Oride of Lihue won a playoff to capture the girls crown at the Hawaii State Junior Championships at The Club at Hokulia in Kona.

Ching won the boys 15-18 division and the overall championship with a two-round total of 141. Robert Greenleaf won the boys 13-14 division at 150.

Oride won the girls 13-14 division with a 152. She then won a four-hole playoff with Kaneohe's Jaclyn Hilea to claim the overall title.
