Gesser re-signs with AFL team

Saint Louis graduate Jason Gesser has re-signed with the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League.

The former Crusader and Washington State quarterback completed 89 of 145 attempts and threw for 1,092 yards and 23 touchdowns in his first season with the Blaze.

Farrington graduate and former Hawaiian Islanders player Josh White re-signed with the Dallas Desperados last week. The fullbacklinebacker rushed for 146 yards and four touchdowns and recorded three sacks last season.

Wahine volleyball season tickets on sale Friday

Season tickets for the 2006 University of Hawaii women's volleyball season go on sale Friday.

The Rainbow Wahine return five starters from last year's squad and will play a home schedule that includes four teams ranked in the top 15 of last year's 2005 final poll -- Florida, UCLA, Stanford and Notre Dame.

Adult season tickets start at $120. Tickets can be purchased at the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office, by phone at 944-2697, or online at HawaiiAthletics.com.

AFCA cuts ties with Hula Bowl

The American Football Coaches Association ended its 10-year relationship with the Hula Bowl, according to an AFCA news release.

AFCA cited "philosophical differences over the future direction of the game" for severing ties with the Hula Bowl, which celebrated its 60th year with January's game at Aloha Stadium after an eight-year run on Maui.

Nick Logan, president of Cornerstone Bancard, took over as the Hula Bowl's owner this year. According to HulaBowlHawaii.com, the 2007 game is scheduled for Jan. 28 at Aloha Stadium.

Island Movers play Tokyo to rare baseball tie

The Island Movers baseball team bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie Tokyo Nogyo University 2-2 yesterday at Sapporo, Japan.

Daniel Payne hit a solo home run for the Movers. Chandler Tidwell pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings after allowing the two early runs. Brandon Muser and Cameron Bayne came on in relief, blanking Tokyo Nogyo for the tie.

Kailua Racquet Club doubles next month

The Kailua Racquet Club's 36th annual Men's Night Doubles Tennis Tournament runs from July 23 to Aug. 5.

Matches begin at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. daily at the Kailua Racquet Club.

Admission is free, although non-club members can purchase a Gold Pass that includes participation in the tournament's clinic, six dinners, and preferred parking and seating. Gold Passes are $200 for one, $380 for two, and $720 for four.
