Publinx berths to Maekawa, Watabu

Sean Maekawa and Casey Watabu both earned spots in next month's USGA Men's Amateur Public Links Championship by winning their respective sectional qualifiers Saturday.

Maekawa carded a 67-69--136 in the Big Island sectional at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course. Henry Park was a stroke back at 141, followed by Gabriel Wilson at 142 in the 23-golfer field.

At Wailua Golf Course, Watabu shot a 73-71--144 to win the Kauai qualifier by four strokes. Pat Viernes finished at 148 and Jonathan Ota third at 149.

The 81st national tournament is scheduled for July 10-15 at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

Lambert, Metzger second on the beach

Punahou alumni Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger finished second yesterday at the AVP Toyota Hermosa Beach (Calif.) Open beach volleyball tournament.

Lambert and Metzger, seeded second, fell 19-21, 21-12, 17-5 to the top-seeded team of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers.

In other results involving players with Hawaii ties: former UH player Hans Stolfus and partner Aaron Wachtfogel tied for fifth; Albert Hannemann (UH) and partner Mark Williams tied for ninth; Punahou alumni Kevin and Scott Wong tied for 13th; Sean Scott (UH) and Dax Holdren, as well as Jason Ring (UH) and Sean Rooney shared 17th; UH alumni Kyle Denitz and Arri Jeschke teamed to tie for 25th; and two former UH players, Dan Fisher and Jason Olive, and their respective partners were among the teams that shared 57th place.
