'Bows complete sweep of Spartans
UH reaches 40 wins and finishes second in the WAC
From staff and wire reports
SAN JOSE, Calif. » Hawaii made minimal use of two bases-loaded situations, but it was enough to defeat San Jose State 3-1 yesterday at Municipal Stadium.
The victory in the final game of the Western Athletic Conference regular season increased the Rainbows' win total to 40, the first time a UH team has reached that mark since the 1992 season.

The 'Bows (40-13, 17-6) finished second in the league standings, a half-game behind the Fresno State Bulldogs, who beat Sacramento State 7-4 yesterday for their 11th consecutive win.
Hawaii, the No. 2 seed, will begin play Thursday in the WAC tournament at Fresno with a game against fifth-seeded Louisiana Tech (32-23, 11-13). The first pitch is scheduled for 8 a.m., Hawaii time.
"We got some runs early and should
have gotten more, but the big thing was we got the job done on the mound today," said UH coach Mike Trapasso.
Ian Harrington limited the Spartans (33-24, 12-12) to five hits in seven innings yesterday. He was in big trouble just once, in the sixth inning.
David Pierson and Chris Williammee singled to start the inning and Ben Agatep walked to load the bases. After a visit from UH pitching coach Chad Konishi, Harrington got out of the jam with two ground balls and a strikeout.
"Ian has a tendency to overthrow. Chad went out to first give Tyler Davis time to warm up and second to try and settle Ian down," Trapasso said. "Ian had to stay within himself and get ground balls and did."
The Spartans' lone run was the only earned run the UH pitching staff allowed in 27 innings in the series.
Davis pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings to earn his third save of the season.
The Rainbows' first run came with two outs in the first. Justin Frash doubled to left field and scored on Luis Avila's single to left-center. It was Avila's 51st RBI this season.
Jon Hee, Robbie Wilder and Derek DuPree started the third inning with soft, opposite-field singles to load the bases. However, a walk to Frash forcing Hee home was the only run UH could muster.
In the fourth, SJSU reliever Greg Shannon walked the bases full to start the inning. But after Matt Winck took over for Shannon, the 'Bows again managed just one run on DuPree's one-out, slow roller to second.
Winck retired 15 consecutive Rainbows before leaving the game after the eighth inning.
"We did not have an answer for Winck today," Trapasso said.
Harrington struck out seven and walked one in winning his seventh game against three losses.
The 'Bows end the regular season with a 16-3 road record.
