Kapolei kids are video champs
Two students from Kapolei High School created a public service announcement that was named "Best of Show" at last week's HMSA Teen Video Awards Contest.
Seniors Dane Kurihara and Justin Ryckman's "Hazards of Smoking" was selected as the best student-produced PSA out of 232 entries. This is the second year that Kapolei has won the competition. The PSA also captured first place in the contest's Anti-Smoking category.
The winners of the competition may be viewed online at www.HMSA.com and will be shown on digital cable channel 344, HMSA Now. They will also be aired on local TV stations later in the year. The other first-place winners:
Best Anti-Drug PSA:"Egghead," by Maui High School students Kelcie Kawano and Ashley Orr
Best Anti-Underage Drinking PSA:"Making a Decision," by Mililani High School student Alexander Delapena
Best Health/Fitness PSA:"Feel Alive," by Seabury Hall student Elliott Cost
First-place winners in each category received $1,000 to purchase video equipment or software for their school, with the "Best of Show" winner receiving an additional $1,000. Second- and third-place winners received $500.
