Kuakini hospital alters emergency access

Kuakini Medical Center plans to renovate its emergency room and will open a temporary emergency room tomorrow on the second floor of the Medical Center, across from the Intensive Care Unit.

The hospital said ambulances and walk-in patients should use the front entrance of the main Medical Center building facing Kuakini Street to enter the temporary emergency room.

The circle driveway between Kuakini Street and the Medical Center will have one-way traffic during the construction project.

Patients can be dropped off and picked up at the Medical Center's main entrance, but cars will not be allowed to park in the area.

The Medical Center said it will continue to provide uninterrupted, 24-hour emergency care during the construction project, expected to take about nine months.

The renovated 16-bed emergency room will have more spacious and private treatment rooms, a larger family waiting area, a centralized nursing station and two entrances for patients to access the room, the Medical Center said in a news release.

Motorcycle fatality is Kailua man, 49

The Department of the Medical Examiner identified the motorcyclist who died Saturday in a crash on the H-1 freeway as 49-year-old Mark Guerland of Kailua.

At about 6:43 p.m., Guerland was traveling west on a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle near the Waialae Avenue overpass when he lost control. Police said he struck a side-view mirror of a multipurpose vehicle that was heading in the same direction.

Police said Guerland then struck a curb and concrete barrier before he was thrown from his motorcycle.

He was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead at 7:29 p.m. Speed was a factor, police said. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe head injuries. This is Oahu's 38th traffic-related facility compared with 30 at this time last year.

4 men are arrested in stabbing in Kalihi

Police arrested four men after they allegedly assaulted two other men in Kalihi yesterday.

At 1:20 a.m., police said, two men, ages 51 and 45, approached the suspects at Mokauea and Kahai streets. Police said the victims confronted them about a disagreement they had days earlier.

The victims and the suspects -- described to be in their early to mid-20s -- began to fight. Police said the 51-year-old man was stabbed several times in the arm, chest, leg and shoulder. The other victim was struck by a bat.

Both were taken to the Queen's Medical Center. Police said the 51-year-old man was listed in serious condition, and the 45-year-old man was listed in stable condition.
