RAINBOW BASEBALL
Hawaii walks all over Grambling State
Dean Turner gives the rest of the pitching staff a break by shutting down the Tigers on the road
GRAMBLING, La. » The travel-challenged Hawaii Rainbow baseball team used excellent pitching and did just enough offensively to defeat the Grambling State Tigers 11-2 in a nonconference game last night.
Mark Rodrigues, Dean Turner, Matt Daly and Jayson Kramer combined on a three-hitter. The Rainbows (33-12) only got nine hits, but received 15 walks and seven of those on board with a free pass scored.
"It was an experience. I told the players after the game, 'Let's go to the hotel. We accomplished what we set out to accomplish.' That's about it," said Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso.
"We wanted to do two things. We wanted to play everybody and we wanted to win. Those objectives were met, therefore, it was a positive experience."
The main players who did not play were the starting pitchers for the first three Western Athletic Conference games against Louisiana Tech -- Steven Wright, Justin Costi and Ian Harrington -- and top relievers Darrell Fisherbaugh and Tyler Davis.
The Bulldogs (28-19, 9-8 WAC) ended a five-game losing streak last night with an 8-7 win over Louisiana-Monroe.
The 'Bows scored a run in the first on Luis Avila's bases-loaded groundout that brought Robbie Wilder in from third.
The Tigers (6-36) tied the score in the third on walks to Walter Roquemore and Marques Hatch, a fly ball to deep center and a wild pitch by Turner.
The senior right-hander settled down to retire 11 of the next 12 batters he faced. Turner did not give up a hit.
"Dean Turner getting his first win as a Rainbow was the highlight of the evening," Trapasso said.
Hawaii broke the tie in the fourth inning. Derek DuPree singled and stole second, and Wilder walked. Jon Hee sacrificed the runners up a base. Justin Frash hit a ball off pitcher Bryon Banks' leg that rolled into right field for a two-run single.
The 'Bows took a 5-1 lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Adam Roberts and Nate Young's run-scoring groundout.
In the six-run eighth inning, the only UH hit was Frash's two-run single.
The Rainbows will have a light practice today at LaTech's J.C. Love Field. In the first of the four games against the Bulldogs tomorrow, Hawaii is the home team. The game, originally scheduled March 19 at Les Murakami Stadium, was rained out.
