Rainbows upset No. 1 USC
Iefke Van Belkum scored three goals to lead the University of Hawaii women's water polo team to a win over previously undefeated USC 10-9 in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament yesterday in Irvine, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine (17-9) never trailed against the top-seeded Women of Troy (25-1) as they advance to today's MPSF championship match for the first time in the program's history. Hawaii plays third-seeded Stanford for the title at 11:45 a.m. Hawaii time.
UH snaps 5-game WAC road skid
After falling behind by two runs early, the University of Hawaii softball team rallied to defeat Nevada 4-2 in nine innings yesterday in Reno, Nev., ending a five-game Western Athletic Conference losing streak.
In the top of the ninth, Kate Robinson hit a home run to score the game-winning run.
Hawaii next plays its final home series of the season against Utah State starting Friday.
Trio of UH coaches to speak at QB Club
University of Hawaii coaches Carmyn James (women's track and field), Mike Miller (swimming) and Mike Sealy (women's volleyball) will speak at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
The program starts at noon following an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom. The public is invited.
'Bows get 5 top-3 finishes at Sacramento
Five University of Hawaii athletes placed in the top 3 of their respective events yesterday at the Sacramento Invitational.
Patricia Gauthier won the pole vault with a jump of 12-1 1/2, while Meghan Weaver and Annett Wichmann finished in 2-3 in the shot put. Emily Shepphard and Chantelle Laan each took silver in their events. Shepphard took second in the high jump, while Laan was the runner up in the 1,500 meters.
