The March of Dimes Walk yesterday started at Kapiolani Park Bandstand in Waikiki. Among the walkers was the Mooney family, with Raymond Mooney pulling a wagon with two of his daughters, Lauren, 5, in back of the wagon, and Ashley, 4, while wife Erica pushed 9-month-old Kadence in a baby carriage. Raymond's sister in Racine, Wis., gave birth prematurely to her daughter, Alexis, who was born weighing 2 pounds, 11 ounces. She is now 3 months old and doing fine. CLICK FOR LARGE

Taro farmers from all islands were in attendance yesterday on the lawn next to Bachman Hall on the UH-Manoa campus to protest University of Hawaii patents on taro plants. Kumu John Keola Lake, left, greeted Walter Ritte. At the protest, called KUKAHI, people were asked to bring a rock, or pohaku, to help commemorate the day. Taro, or kalo, is considered sacred by Hawaiians. CLICK FOR LARGE
