Wahine advance to semis

Iefke Van Belkum and Kelly Mason each scored three goals as the fourth-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team advanced to the semifinals of the MPSF tournament with a 10-8 victory over California yesterday in Irvine, Calif.

Van Belkum scored all three of her goals in the first half as the Wahine raced out to a 6-1 advantage in the second period, before holding on for the win. They will play top-seeded USC today.

Oda earns coaching honors

Hawaii-Hilo women's tennis coach Kula Oda was named the 2005-2006 NCAA Division II West Region Coach of the Year yesterday.

The Vulcans finished 11-5 in the regular season and are ranked 16th in the College Tennis online poll and second in the West Region. Oda has amassed a 69-37 record in five seasons as Vulcans coach.

Wahine softball swept

The Rainbow Wahine softball team lost two games against Nevada yesterday in Reno, Nev.

Tanisha Milca and Alana Power homered in the first game, but Hawaii couldn't overcome a seven-run fourth inning by the Wolfpack in losing game one 7-4.

Brandi Peiler and Tyleen Tausaga added home runs in game two, but the Wahine lost 4-3 in 10 innings. The Wahine fell to 25-19 overall and 7-6 in WAC play.

BYU-Hawaii hires coach

Former Seasiders assistant coach Jeff Miller was named the new men's soccer team coach yesterday, taking on the task of rebuilding a program that was dropped after the 2000 season.

"I am extremely excited that BYU-Hawaii has brought back men's soccer," Miller said. "BYU-Hawaii has an outstanding sports history and I hope we can build a soccer program that will add to that tradition."

Miller was the team's most valuable player in his senior season at BYU-Hawaii in 1997.

Hawaii fails to qualify

The Hawaii coed sailing team finished fourth at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Team Race Championships yesterday in Redwood, Calif., but failed to qualify for the Team Race Nationals.

Stanford and USC finished 1-2 to earn the two bids for next month's nationals. Hawaii, ranked seventh in the nation by Sailing World, finished the all-day event with a 5-7 record.

McKee falls short in semis

Wailuku's Keola McKee lost a 5-0 decision to Luis Yanez of Duncanville, Texas, in the semifinals of the 106-pound weight class division of the Golden Gloves competition yesterday in Omaha, Neb. Yanez is the top-ranked fighter in his weight class and will face Georgia's Roberto Ceron in the finals.
