Yvonne Morris welcomed guest of honor Dr. Gabriel W.C. Ma to the 2006 Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship Dinner, a benefit for Maryknoll School, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom on April 9. Ma is this year's recipient of Maryknoll's Noblesse Oblige Award for his many significant contributions to the school, the medical profession and the community.

Nina Keali'iwahamana talked with Maryknoll School President Michael Baker before dinner while many attendees were checking out the items up for bid in the silent auction. Keali'iwahamana, known to Maryknoll alumnae as Nina Rodrigues, Class of '54, emceed the program and sang during the opening ceremonies. She was the recipient of the Noblesse Oblige Award in 2002.

George Ariyoshi, center, recipient of the Noblesse Oblige Award in 2004, was joined by his son, Ryojo, and his daughter-in-law, Chikage, as he talked with friends and well-wishers during the cocktail hour. ("Noblesse Oblige," the Maryknoll school motto, is translated as "to whom much is given, much is expected.")

A BIG NIGHT FOR JAZZ

Jimmy Borges and pianist Betty Loo Taylor, one of the all-time great duos in local jazz, closed the program on a high note, performing with three other local jazz greats: saxophonist Gabe Baltazar, drummer/percussionist Noel Okimoto and bassist Steve Jones.

Kekumano Awards publicist Sharla Montvel-Cohen conferred with photographer Geralyn Camarillo. Camarillo graduated from Maryknoll in 1986, Montvel-Cohen from the Academy of Our Lady of Guam that same year.
