Higuchi finds her stroke for Masters College
Paula Higuchi, a freshman from Baldwin, is putting together a solid first collegiate season with the Masters College women's tennis team. She was named the school's athlete of the week for her success the past two weeks.
Higuchi, who plays No. 2 singles for the NAIA school, is tied with Rebekah Kolstad for overall singles/doubles wins (11) and with her partner, Mary Buck, leads the team with six doubles victories.
"Paula has played at a competitive level all year, especially against the best teams in the nation. Paula competes with a lot of tenacity and almost always can find a way to disrupt her opponents," said coach Alan Harvey in a story on the school's Web site.
Seki, Chun move up leaderboard
Jenna Seki (Punahou '03) and Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) finished in the top 10 at the Peg Barnard California Collegiate golf tournament at the Stanford Course last weekend.
Seki, a Stanford junior, fired a 4-over par 146 to tie for fifth place. Chun, a freshman for the Cardinal, was one stroke back at 147 and tied for seventh.
Kayla Morinaga (Sacred Hearts '05), a freshman at Portland State, shot 16-over 158 and tied for 49th place.
Shelcie Takenouchi, a freshman at Southern California, tied for 76th place. The 2005 Kauai High School graduate was 25 over with a 167.
» Lindsay Hong, a sophomore at Yale, helped the Elis to a second-place finish behind host Georgetown in the Lady Hoya Invitational at Leesburg, Va., on April 1-2.
The Punahou grad had identical rounds of 80 for a 16-over 160 to tie for 15th place on the 6,296-yard course.
» Amanda Wilson, a freshman at Arizona, shot a 77-81-74 -- 232 in the PING/ASU Invitational that ended April 3. The Waiakea graduate ended up in a tie for 50th place.
Freshman Asuka breaks UC Irvine's digs record
Freshman libero Brent Asuka (Iolani '05) is UC Irvine's single-season record holder for digs. With 24 digs in Wednesday's win at Northridge, Asuka has 320 going into tomorrow's MPSF final against UC Santa Barbara.
The old record of 275 was set by Greg Ford in 2004.
Asuka leads the conference with 244 digs, a 3.38 dpg average.
