Hawaii players will be missed
THE Missouri Valley College women's soccer team will not have a Hawaii presence this fall. That is something Vikings coach Derek Burton has enjoyed for several years.
"As of now, we do not have any Hawaiians on the way," said Burton who has lost two senior standouts from the 50th state.
Jen Katres graduated a semester early in December and Lindsey Peck graduates in May. Both majored in biology and joined the Vikings from Kalaheo High School.
Katres, a central defender, was a three-year starter.
"Jen was a very important player for us. She was a solid player you could count on day in and day out. She definitely was a leader for us," Burton said. "Jen was a two-time academic all-conference, all-region and All-America. She doesn't have much in the way of stats as a central defender, but she did get her one and only career goal this season, on senior day ... her last home game."
Peck was seventh in the Heart of America Athletic Conference with 27 points on 11 goals and five assists in helping the Vikings to a 12-5-1 record in 2005.
The midfielder was a first-team All-HAAC pick in 2005, the third time she earned all conference honors.
"Lindsey was an outstanding player, one of the most physically gifted players I've coached at any level. She started all but one game in three seasons," Burton said.
Peck scored 33 goals and had 16 assists in her career.
» Alyssa Chun had a chance to sit down at breakfast last month with Santa Clara women's soccer coach Jerry Smith when he was in town for the Olympic Development Program camp.
"It went very well. We talked about the school and playing there, said Chun, an All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu second team selection this year, who also considered Oregon.
"I visited the campus and it is nice. It is a great school academically and there are more people from Hawaii there than at Oregon," said Chun, who will be an invited walk-on. She is receiving half an academic scholarship.
She played all over for Kamehameha's state championship team, seeing action as a defender, central midfielder and even striker.
» Angelo and Karlin Ladera from Maui played significant roles as the Hope International Royals qualified for the National Christian College Athletic Association postseason tournament for the first time in nine years.
Karlin, a junior defender from Maui High School, was part of a defense that held opponents to an average of two goals a match. A captain, he started 16 of 17 matches and got off three shots without scoring.
Angelo, a junior midfielder from King Kekaulike, started all 19 matches, scored one goal and had one assist. He was named to the NCCAA all-tournament team.
» Kari Otani started all 17 matches she appeared in for the 5-11-2 Portland State Vikings. The junior midfielder from Maui High School put 10 of 23 shots on the goal, but was denied the net.
