UH's Robinson is WAC pitcher of week

Hawaii's Kate Robinson is the Western Athletic Conference softball pitcher of the week.

Robinson pitched a perfect game in her first start of the season, striking out 14 in an 8-0 win over conference foe New Mexico State.

It was the first perfect game of the season by the Rainbow Wahine staff. Justine Smethurst did it in a 6-0 win over Longwood and she combined on a perfect game with Jessica Morton in a 25-0, five-inning victory.

The Rainbow Wahine (23-14, 7-1) are one and a half games ahead of second-place Fresno State in the WAC standings.

Kaniho is new Kamehameha volleyball coach

Guy Kaniho is the new varsity boys volleyball coach at Kamehameha, athletic director Erv Kau said yesterday.

Kaniho led the Warriors junior varsity team to ILH championships the past three seasons. He also coached girls volleyball at Kaiser and boys volleyball at Saint Louis.

He takes over for Pono Maa, who stepped down due to family and professional obligations, according to Kau.

"I'm extremely excited and ready to accept the challenges that come with the job," Kaniho said. "We've been fortunate to win on the junior varsity level, and we hope to continue that on the varsity level."

Kaniho is a former Warrior volleyball player and a 1986 Kamehameha graduate. He also played for Brigham Young and got a bachelor's degree at the University of Hawaii.

Seasiders capture doubleheader from Cougars

Brigham Young-Hawaii swept a doubleheader from Azusa Pacific in Laie yesterday, winning both games on its last at-bat.

Senior Natalie Mordinow pitched a one-hitter in the opener, a 1-0 victory. Melissa Lehano scored the winning run on the Cougars' double error.

The Seasiders (10-24) pulled out the second game 6-5 in extra innings. Echo Allred pitched a complete game and drove home the winning run with a single in the bottom of the eighth.

Football kickers camp this summer at UH

The Chris Sailer Kicking Instructional Day Camp will be held at the University of Hawaii, July 29-30.

The camp, which will have pro instructors, runs from 8 am. to noon at the school's grass-field practice facility.

The cost is $250 per person. The camp is for kickers, punters and long snappers.

One of the instructors is former UH punter Chad Shrout.
