DuPree, solid pitching give UH twin-bill sweep
Hawaii pitching blanked UC Santa Barbara on three hits over the final 12 innings in the Rainbows' 8-6, 3-0 sweep of yesterday's baseball doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium.
Derek DuPree knocked in the game-winning run in both games before 808 fans.
In the nine-inning first game, Matt Daly and Steven Wright blanked the Gauchos over the final five innings after UCSB tied the score at 6-6 in the fourth. The right-handers allowed two hits and only one runner to reach second base.
Daly earned his fourth win without a loss and Wright got the save, the 10th of his career.
Justin Costi and Darrell Fisherbaugh combined on a one-hitter in the seven-inning second
game. Costi fanned a career-high 10 batters, but after walking two with one out in the seventh, let Fisherbaugh close the game with a strikeout and grounder to first.
"The first game was interesting. We had a four-run lead and squandered it, but Daly puts up zeros, Derek gets the big hit and Steven (Wright) closes it," said UH coach Mike Trapasso. "Steven had to get his work in and 25 pitches was just right."
The 'Bows (22-8) had nothing to show on the scoreboard in the nightcap despite getting two hits in each of the first three innings off UCSB starter Brian Tracy.
Hawaii ended the frustration in the fifth by scoring three times.
Nate Young led off with a single off Tracy's glove and took second on Robbie Wilder's sacrifice bunt.
DuPree, who gets most of his hits the opposite way to left field, belted a 1-2 pitch to the base of the wall in right for a run-scoring triple.
"I was trying to let the pitch go deep so I could go the other way, but he fooled me with a changeup," DuPree said
Justin Frash, with four hits already in the two games, was intentionally walked, but Luis Avila spoiled the strategy with a two-run double to right-center field.
"I just figured sooner or later something would happen. It's just that you have to keep putting up zeros on the other side against a team that is swinging the bat pretty well. Justin was able to do that," Trapasso said.
Costi's batterymate, freshman Landon Hernandez said, "Tonight Justin had good fastball command. When he has that, we get them leaning over the plate with his other pitches (changeup and curve), then bust them inside with the fastball."

Hawaii's Robbie Wilder crashed into UC Santa Barbara's Patrick Rose at third base in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader.

Trapasso said it was the senior right-hander's best effort as a Rainbow.
"I guess that's true. I only gave up one hit and they didn't seem to be hitting the ball hard," said Costi, who admitted he was trying to nibble too much when he walked the last two batters he faced.
The Gauchos (9-12) turned singles to center on the first pitch to Alden Carrithers and the third pitch to Chris Valaika into two unearned runs off UH starter Ian Harrington in the first inning of the first game.
On Robbie Blauer's sacrifice bunt attempt, Harrington threw to third in time for the force, but Frash failed to step on the bag for an error. Carrithers scored on a fielder's choice by Chris Webber and Valaika came home on Patrick Rose's slow bouncer to short.
The 'Bows answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Wilder walked and took second on DuPree's single to left. The runners advanced another base when left fielder Dave Harrit bobbled the ball. Frash singled to left, scoring Wilder, with DuPree stopping at third. He then scored on Avila's sacrifice fly to center.
Matt Inouye reached on a fielder's choice when Frash was forced at second. Inouye stole second and scored on Esteban Lopez's double to left-center field.
Hawaii increased its lead to 6-2 in the second inning.
Joe Spiers' one-out bloop single to right, another walk to Wilder and DuPree's groundout put runners at second and third. Frash drove both teammates home with a double to left. He scored on Avila's first-pitch, line single to right.
The Gauchos rallied to tie the score at 6-6 in the fourth.
Harrington issued a one-out walk to Matt Emerick. Mario Lewis singled to center, but was forced at second for the second out in the inning on Matt McColgan's fielder's choice grounder to short.
However, Harrit doubled to right-center field scoring Emerick, with McColgan moving to third.
Both runners scored on Carrithers' single to center. He advanced to second on the throw home and scored on Valaika's double to left.
After Harrington hit the next batter with a 1-2 pitch, Daly relieved and got the final out on a grounder to second.
The Rainbows, held in check for three innings by UCSB starter Andy Graham, broke the tie with a two-out run in the sixth. Wilder drew his third walk, stole second and came around on DuPree's single to center.
The series concludes with a game tonight at 6:35.
