Saint Mary's makes it official: Clapp to UH

MORAGA, Calif. » Saint Mary's College planned an official news conference today to announce that athletic director Carl Clapp is leaving the school after almost six years to take the associate AD job at the University of Hawaii.

Clapp has served the AD post for the Gaels since 2000. The Star-Bulletin reported he was leaving for UH on March 18.

Saint Mary's will also officially announce the promotion of assistant athletic director Mark Orr to the top job.

UH officials yesterday said there were no announcements or press conferences scheduled regarding Clapp's hire.

Rainbow Warriors earn fifth straight tennis win

The nationally ranked University of Hawaii men's tennis team picked up its fifth straight win with a 5-2 victory over UC Davis yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The No. 59 Rainbow Warriors (8-4) swept the doubles matches and got singles wins from Sascha Heinemann, Ryan Sceats, Chad Faulk and Jarrod Diepraam to top the Aggies.

The UH women's team lost a rain-delayed match to UC Davis 4-2.

UH's Jacqui Williams and Florence Wasko won their singles matches for the Rainbow Wahine (1-16-1). UC Davis freshman and Iolani graduate Jenna Kappel defeated UH's Samanta Cappella 6-1, 6-2 to contribute to the Aggies' victory.

» No. 2 Brigham Young-Hawaii routed West Alabama 9-0 yesterday in NCAA Division II women's tennis at Montgomery, Ala.

The Seasiders (16-0) didn't lose a game in the three doubles and six singles matches. Jing Jing Liu, Julia Ustyuzhanina, Tetyana Bula, Petra Teller, Gurianna Korinihona and Ally Taylor all won singles and doubles matches.

>>Brigham Young-Hawaii also beat West Alabama 9-0 in men's tennis, dropping just one set in the nine matches.

Dillon Porter, Junyoung Kim, Leon So'onalole, Marvin So'onalole and Brad Elmer all won singles and doubles matches for the Seasiders (12-0).

Hawaii sets 3 records in first game of sweep

Two University of Hawaii pitchers combined on a perfect game and the Rainbow Wahine set three single-game records in a 25-0 softball rout of Grambling State yesterday at Grambling, La.

Freshman Justine Smethurst and sophomore Jessica Morton tossed UH's second perfect game of the season in the five-inning contest. The Wahine (19-13) broke the school marks for runs scored, hits (25) and RBIs (24) in winning the first game of a doubleheader. Clare Warwick led UH by going 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a home run.

UH completed a doubleheader sweep with a 14-0 win in the second game. Courtney Baughman and Kate Robinson combined for a three-hit shutout.

» Hawaii Pacific swept Cal State San Bernardino 7-1 and 5-3 in a softball doubleheader yesterday in San Bernardino, Calif.

Jennifer Baron homered in both games for the Sea Warriors (17-5) and Krystal Plunkett, Lia Pedrina and Jessica Adolph all homered in the first game.

Courtney Kessell fired a complete-game six-hitter in the second game.
