Over 1,000 turn out to see Price roasted and honored

Over 1,000 people turned out for the OIA Athletic Foundation fundraiser Thursday at the Sheraton that honored Larry Price. They also got a kick out of him being roasted by the likes of Gov. Linda Lingle, Karen Keawehawaii, Frank DeLima, Chuck Cotton and Rick Blangiardi, a former football player Larry coached at UH. Emcee Mike Perry, Larry's partner on KSSK Radio, said Larry's "the only person to undergo a quadruple bypass to sell more tickets to this fundraiser." The guv said she has known Larry for 30 years but "I still don't understand him." Larry got in some licks, too. He said Mike has no athletic ability whatsoever except jumping to conclusions. Winding up, Larry said, "It's better to be insulted than forgotten." It wasn't all insults for the Roosevelt High and UH grad, who was a terrific football player, and who went on to become head UH football coach and to earn a doctorate from USC. Henry Kapono, who also played football for Larry and entertained at the show, said, "Two people made the biggest impact in my life when I was young, one was my dad, the other was Coach Price." Henry said Larry also taught him slack key and flamenco guitar. The Honolulu Jazz Quartet, Ginny Tiu and Johnny Valentine also performed

Lunchtime jazz on the Kawaiahao Church lawn

Betty Loo Taylor has organized a string of Wednesday lunchtime jazz sessions with her trio on the Kawaiahao Church lawn, from noon to 1 p.m. Jimmy Borges is guest singer for the opener this Wednesday under the tent and for the closer April 12. Sax star Gabe Baltazar will appear with Jimmy both of his dates. Bassist Steve Jones and drummer Sonny Froman are in Betty's trio. Guest singers for the rest of the series are: March 15 Lulee Fisher, March 22 Kanoe Cazimero, March 29 Sherry Shao Ling and April 5 Clayton Naluai. Bring lunch and enjoy sounds of the Lenten celebration ... Dinner stations at Morton's, featuring the steak house's signature dishes with wine and martinis, will be available at Bishop Museum's fundraiser Monday at the restaurant, 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $150; call 848-4157. Morton's Chicago-based President Edie Ames will attend ... Craig Miller, president and CEO of the Ruth's Chris Steak House chain, dined at the Restaurant Row Ruth's Tuesday ...
