’Bows cut it close
Hawaii comes back from a 10-2 deficit to beat its island neighbor for the 15th straight time
Jon Hee's sharp single down the right-field line scored Robbie Wilder with the winning run as Hawaii rallied from an eight-run deficit to beat Hawaii Pacific 11-10 in 10 innings last night at Les Murakami Stadium.
"I had two thoughts. One, I was very proud of our character. Never once did I see quit in the dugout. Somehow they knew we would be able to claw our way back," said UH coach Mike Trapasso.
"Second, it was awful that we got into that position. That is because HPU came out and stuck it to us for six innings. All we did was throw our gloves on the field.
"Dean Turner settled the game for us in the middle innings and Matt Daly was outstanding."
Daly, a freshman right-hander, pitched three innings of two-hit ball to get his first collegiate win.
The Sea Warriors almost ended 20 years of frustration and a 14-game losing streak to Hawaii but couldn't stop the Rainbows (6-2) from scoring eight runs in the last four innings.
The Rainbows tied the score at 10-all with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. The tenth run scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Luis Avila. However, after reloading the bases, HPU reliever Michael Kealoha got Jorge Franco to line to short and Esteban Lopez to fly to center.
The Sea Warriors (6-7) struck quickly with a pair of runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Brandon Sato reached first on a wild pitch on swinging strike three. He advanced to third on Grandon Costa's double to left field.

The runners held when UH starter Justin Costi got the next two batters to ground to Justin Frash, who was making his first start at third base. But the first pitch to Danny Lee was a passed ball and both runners scored.
Wilder started the UH first inning with a ground single to center. He took second on a balk by HPU starter Mario Ramirez, moved to third on Hee's grounder to second and scored when Frash beat out an infield single to short.
With one out in the second, Hawaii Pacific took advantage of Costi's loss of control to take a 5-1 lead. The senior right-hander hit Kealoha, walked Adam Arakawa and hit Sato to load the bases.
Costa's single scored Kealoha and ended Costi's night.
Freshman right-hander Jayson Kramer came in for his first appearance of the season.
Jherell Miller's sacrifice fly to right scored Arakawa and sent Sato to third, from where he scored on Gavin Concepcion's single to center.
HPU took a 6-2 lead with an unearned run in the third.

Spencer Omalza reached first on a throwing error by shortstop Nathan Young, moved to second on Kealoha's bloop single to right and scored on Sato's single up the middle.
A two-out double to left-center field by Landon Hernandez and Derek Dupree's run-scoring single to center gave UH its second run in the fourth.
Dean Turner, who retired the Sea Warriors in order in the fourth and fifth innings, ran into trouble in the sixth when HPU used five hits to score four runs and take a 10-2 lead. The big hit was a two-run single to center by Colton Silva.
UH loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but settled for one run on Wilder's walk that forced Ryan Asato home.
Avila's double to left-center field, a single to right by Adam Roberts and Asato's sacrifice fly produced UH's fourth run.
The 'Bows inched closer in the eighth when Young reached third on a throwing error by HPU's third pitcher Brandon Muser.
Wilder then was hit by a pitch. Hee singled Young home, with Wilder stopping at second. The runners moved up a base on Frash's ground out and scored on Avila's triple to right. Roberts' single to right scored Avila.
The 'Bows reloaded the bases on a walk to Asato and Hernandez's infield single, but Kealoha, HPU's second baseman, made a diving stop of Derek Dupree's grounder to end the inning.
