Mayor wants buildings named after Fasi
Mayor Mufi Hannemann has proposed renaming the Honolulu Municipal Building in honor of former Mayor Frank Fasi.
The Civic Center would also bear Fasi's name under a draft resolution submitted to the City Council yesterday.
"Mayor Fasi served longer than any other mayor of Honolulu and was recently named one of Honolulu's 100 most influential people by the Honolulu Centennial Commission," Hannemann said.
"Among his many outstanding contributions to this city during his 22 years as mayor ... was the construction of the municipal building and the transformation of the Civic Center grounds from an asphalt parking lot to the parklike setting we enjoy today."
The announcement follows an amendment, which the mayor signed into law yesterday, that allows public facilities to be named after individuals who are alive.
A city ordinance used to require that namesakes be dead.
The City Council has also proposed that the Waipio Soccer Complex be named after former U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink, who died in 2002. Mink represented the islands in Congress for 24 years.
