Celebrate the Year of the Dog
» Chinatown Open House: Fireworks and lion dances, 5 to 10 p.m., Jan. 27 and 28 at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza, on the corner of Maunakea and Beretania streets. Booths will feature food, art and crafts. Stage performances will include folk dances and songs, kung fu demonstrations and various Chinese cultural acts.
» Lion dances: 6 to 9 p.m., Jan. 27 on Maunakea and King streets.
» Chinese New Year Celebration: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Jan. 28 at the Chinese Cultural Plaza. A continuation of the open house, with stage performances, food and craft booths.
» New Year festival: 10 a.m. Jan. 28, Market City Shopping Center. Firecrackers, lion dance, free fortune cookies. Call 734-0282.
» Lion dance: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 4, Aloha Tower Marketplace. Wah Ngai Lion Dance Association performs lion dance and kung fu.
» Narcissus Festival Fashion Show: 11 a.m. March 5 at Hilton Hawaiian Village, Coral Ballroom. Opens with boutique sales. Call 533-3181 for reservations.
» The Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa celebrations: Traditional lion dance throughout the hotel and a special menu at the Golden Dragon Restaurant. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. Call 949-4321.
» "Dog Show": Artwork inspired by the "fire dog" on display, Jan. 28 through Feb. 26. presented by lodestar collective, Uluniu Arts Building, 438-A Uluniu St. in Kailua. Call 262-4606. Free admission.
» "Relive the Plantation Days": 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 4 at Hawaii's Plantation Village. The event highlights the Korean Heritage Group and celebrates Chinese New Year. Highlights include a Chinese lion dance, kimchee demonstration and sampling, a presentation on Korean costume dressing, music, games and hands-on activities. Admission is $7; $4 for kamaainas; and children 12 and under are free.
» New Year celebration: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 11. Traditional lion dance through all of the Ward centers. Food and product booths and free keiki crafts at Ward Warehouse, ground floor Ewa end.

Maui Chinese New Year festival: 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Maui Mall in Kahului. Call Cathy Tam, 276-3707.
» Japanese Cultural Society of Maui's annual Shinnen Enkai: Dinner, Jan. 28 at the Elleair Rainbow Room at the Maui Beach Hotel. Traditional otoso (sake welcome) with no-host cocktail hour to follow at 5:30 p.m. Dinner at 6 p.m. Cost for the buffet dinner is $32 for JCS Maui members, $40 for non- members, $17 for children ages 5 to 10 years, and free for children ages 4 and under.
