Leaders lovin’ it

Chad Campbell and Jim Furyk found the wind and rain at Waialae to their liking yesterday

It wasn't the kind of picture-postcard day the Hawaii Tourism Authority likes to promote, but second-round leaders Chad Campbell and Jim Furyk felt it was suitable for framing.

They endured a windy and rainy afternoon at Waialae Country Club to move to 6-under 134 as they prepare for the weekend of the $5.1 million Sony Open in Hawaii. Both shot back-to-back 67s the first two days in trying conditions that left only 28 golfers in the red and another 11 at even par after 36 holes.

David Toms remained in the chase with a 1-under 69 yesterday for a 5-under 135 for the tournament. Mercedes Championships winner Stuart Appleby moved into contention with a 4-under 66. He is tied for fourth with Jerry Smith, J.B. Holmes and Michelle Wie's playing partner Camilo Villegas at 4-under 136. Villegas fashioned the best round of the tournament with a 6-under 64 under the watchful eye of the large gallery following Wie.

She didn't disappoint her legion of fans with her 2-under 68, but still failed to make the cut in her third trip around Waialae. Her two-day total of 7-over 147 left her four strokes shy of the magic number of plus 3. She was one of 40 golfers who shot 1 under or better yesterday in the wind and rain.

Not that the weather report bothered Campbell and Furyk all that much.

"Don't change a thing," Campbell said about the conditions that have plagued the golfers over the first two days. "It's been good. The last two days I've played really well. It's nice coming back. I had two months off. I didn't play anything in the offseason, so it was nice to get refreshed and come out here and play well."

Furyk can't say the same. He not only finished fourth at last week's Mercedes Championships, but also won a tournament in South Africa late last year, leaving him looking for a break after this week's event. He conceded yesterday that two tough days in the breezes had left him a bit winded.

Chad Campbell is tied for the lead after shooting a pair of 67s.

"I'm tired after two days of that," Furyk said. "I think it tests you as much mentally as it does physically. Physically, you've got to hit some good golf shots and control the ball in the wind. But it wears you out playing in all that wind. So I'm looking for a little rest and I'll be ready to go."

Considering who's giving chase, that might not be a bad idea. Past Sony Open winner Jerry Kelly is among a group of nine golfers at 3-under 137. First-round leader Rory Sabbatini (72) and K.J. Choi (71) are also only three shots off the lead. Mark Calcavecchia (69), Fred Funk (71) and Robert Gamez (69) were among a dozen golfers at 1 under for the event.

Defending champion and No. 2 in the world Vijay Singh (69), No. 8-ranked Adam Scott (69) and 1999 Sony Open champ Jeff Sluman (73) were three of 11 guys who were at even par, only six shots off the pace. At this point, a lot of talented guys are in the hunt, many who have had past success in the island chain.

"You know, I think playing the Mercedes last week and playing in all that wind is a little bit of a benefit for me to come over," Furyk said. "The golf courses are totally different, but you still have to hit those low, piercing shots and you have to be able to work the ball into the wind a little bit. That was a big benefit."

Campbell didn't have the benefit of playing in the winners-only event last week, but he grew up in Texas, where wind and rain are common on golf courses throughout the Lone Star State.

He spent most of his offseason practicing around his Fort Worth, Texas, home. He missed playing at Mercedes this year because he didn't manage a win last year. Campbell would like to change that and feels like this course offers him that opportunity.

"Yeah, I missed out on the Mercedes this year, so disappointed about that," Campbell said. "I definitely wanted to go back there. It's a little breezy out there, but yeah, I played a lot growing up in it (in Texas). It makes it interesting, you've got to play a lot of different shots, hitting a lot of three-quarter shots, keeping it down underneath the wind. A lot of times the hardest part is putting in the wind because that's a real big guessing game in how it's going to take the ball. That's probably the toughest part."

Appleby proved he can handle the tough conditions last week. He scrambled a bit yesterday, finishing with five birdies and one bogey at the par-4 second. Appleby finished second here to Paul Azinger in 2000 and also has a sixth, giving him confidence going into the weekend.

"I do OK here," Appleby said. "Absolutely, I'd love to win here. Because it just keeps solidifying what you're doing at that time and that it works. There's no truer test in doing what you believe to be right and it's proven to be right coming into the week, and there's nothing more frustrating than doing something you think is right and it's not. That's the beauty of the game."
