Menehunes hold Falcons to 30
On paper, Kalani got what it wanted defensively.
The young Falcons limited Moanalua's top guns, Wayne West and Stevie Austin, to a combined 14 points. It didn't matter, however, because the Menehunes got a superlative effort from their bench in a 69-30 rout last night at Moanalua's gym.
Reserve forward Casey Shuler scored eight of his 10 points during a big second-quarter run as Moanalua broke open a close game. Bao Lei Jun led the Menehunes with 12 points, and guard Stephen Kina added nine points and five steals.
"We're young experience-wise, so you never know what's going to happen," Menehunes coach Dan Hale said. "It's nice to have options. For Casey, it's all new, a learning experience."
It was the Oahu Interscholastic Association East opener for both teams. Moanalua's win spoiled the regular-season debut of Kalani coach Richard Miyasaka.
"We kind of had a bad couple of days of practice. Some guys were sick, other guys were missing for different reasons," said Miyasaka, a former assistant at Kaimuki.
The Falcons, a run-and-gun squad that has scored as many as 90 points in nonconference play, simply couldn't get any consistency from long range against the Menehunes.
Defensively, they locked down Moanalua's scoring threats. West, who has scored as many as 33 points in nonconference action, was held to eight points as the Falcons double-teamed him on the perimeter. Instead of forcing his way through the Kalani matchup zone, he distributed the ball.
"We looked for West, but their other guys came through," Miyasaka said. "They stepped it up."
Moanalua's Jay Yoshizawa added 10 assists, but committed seven turnovers.
Jeff Kautakoun led Kalani with nine points. Junior forward Holu Kaaihue led all rebounders with 13 before leaving the game with a knee injury in the third quarter.
Kalani's top long-distance shooter, Jonah Letoto, missed his first six tries from beyond the arc and finished with just three points.
"If they get hot, they can ring up 10 or 15 points real quick," Hale said.
