Freshmen help Grossmont to title

Five freshmen from Hawaii are members of the Grossmont College (El Cajon, Calif.) football team that won the California Junior College Championship on Saturday with a 41-38 win over San Francisco City College.

The starters are Lee Paleafei (Pearl City '03), a 5-foot-9, 180-pound outside linebacker; Preston Faletagaloa (Pearl City '03), a 6-3, 302-pound offensive lineman; and Timoteo Mauga (Pearl City '05), a 6-3, 235-pound defensive end.

The reserves are Stephen King (Pearl City '05), a 6-1, 185-pound defensive back and Derek Hinkley (Punahou '04), a 5-11, 220-pound linebacker.

Paleafei was named the defensive player of the game. He had a game-high 14 tackles, five for loss.

During the season Paleafei scored touchdowns on a 73-yard interception, a 21-yard blocked kick and a 25-yard fumble recovery.

Grossmont College was named the mythical national champion of community college football Tuesday by J.C. Grid-Wire.

All-America honors for Hashimoto

Duke Hashimoto has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Men's Division I All-America second team. The senior striker for Southern Methodist scored a team-high 11 goals, five of them game winners, and had seven assists this year.

The Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Conference USA selection is an Iolani graduate.

Lee leads Oaks to conference victory

Sophomore guard Kepua Lee scored a game-high 24 points as the Menlo College Oaks (5-2) rallied from a one-point deficit at the half to beat Holy Names 56-39 last Friday in their California Pacific Conference opener.

Lee (Moanalua '04) is the Oaks' leading scorer, averaging 17.4 points a game. She is second among the starters with a .486 field-goal percentage and in minutes (27.9) and third in rebounds (44).

Only senior guard Shannon Riley (Maryknoll '02) averages more court time (30.4). She is Menlo's second-leading scorer (10.6 points per game) and assist leader (23).

Kelci Fushikoshi (Lahainaluna '05), a freshman guard, has played in all seven games and is averaging 2.6 ppg.

Pacific's Torres tops wrestling rankings

Kapua Torres, a Kahuku graduate and the defending national college and junior champion in the 112.25-pound class, was ranked No. 1 in the first rankings of the year by TheMat.com.

Torres, a junior at Pacific University (Forest Grove, Ore.), has yet to wrestle this season while working out a nerve injury. Ashley Truchan, a sophomore from Hilo, competes in the 158.75-pound class.

The Boxers, with eight wrestlers in the individual rankings, are No. 3 in the first U.S. Women's Wrestling College Poll.

Two wrestlers from Hawaii at Missouri Valley College (Marshall, Mo.) also were ranked No. 1 in their class.

Clarissa Calibuso, a junior from Waipahu, topped the 121-pound class and Stephany Lee, a junior from Moanalua, heads up the 158.5-pound class.

Also on the Vikings wrestling team in the 105.5-pound class are Angelee Homma, a junior from Aiea, and Tanya Miyasaki, a junior from Castle who began her college career at Menlo.

Chaneal Meletia, a sophomore from Hawaii Baptist Academy, competes in the 138.5-pound class and junior Selina Perez from Baldwin wrestles in the 158.5-pound class.
