Glanville says he will re-up as DC
The Hawaii assistant plans to stay as long as June Jones is the head coach of the Warriors
Hawaii defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville said yesterday he plans to continue with the Warriors after this season.
"Whatever June says is correct," said Glanville, when asked if he would remain a member of head coach June Jones' staff indefinitely.
At his weekly news conference yesterday, Jones said "it's very important" to the Warriors' future success that Glanville extend his one-year deal. The contract also includes associate head coach duties and pays around $125,000 per year.
"He's voiced that ... he's going to be here as long as I'm here and my intentions are to be here," Jones said. "I would anticipate unless he gets a head coaching job somewhere that he would be here."
Glanville, 64, who joined the UH staff last spring, said he is not seeking a head-coaching job. He is the former head coach of the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. Jones worked on his staff at both, and succeeded him as head coach of the Falcons.
Hawaii (3-6, 3-4 Western Athletic Conference) goes into Saturday night's WAC finale at Aloha Stadium against Utah State (2-6, 1-4) with the 100th statistically rated defense in the nation. The Warriors yield an average of 432.9 yards per game.
It's an improvement over last year, when UH was 116th of 117 teams (487.8 yards) -- and last against the rush (252.6).
The defense's highlight this year is a 24-0 victory at Idaho, which was Hawaii's first shutout since 1999.
UH changed its defensive scheme to a 3-4 blitzing alignment going into this season, a formation Glanville used with the Oilers and Falcons.
Jones said yesterday it isn't that much different in function than the previous base 4-3 defense, since one of the defensive ends often performed the duties of an outside linebacker.
"Jerry's kind of put his stamp on it, so that part is different," Jones said.
At least one player is excited about Glanville's return.
"We've already learned a lot from him," defensive end Karl Noa said. "I hope he comes back."
Glanville said before the season he looks forward to recruiting. Jones said the Warriors need to build around promising returnees like defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis and inside linebacker Solomon Elimimian.
"Even though we still have a lot of good defensive players back, we still need to recruit some D-linemen and some corners. You have to have those guys, continually," Jones said. "We have some good linebackers waiting in the wings. The need areas of the guys who can make a difference are pass rushers and corners."
Glanville said he doesn't anticipate giving younger players more downs in the final three games to build for next season.
"I just coach every week the same, it doesn't matter," he said. "If you're the best player for that game you're the best player for that game."
