SOMETHING TERMINAL is about to happen to one of the characters of ABC's made-in-Hawaii series "Lost" -- perhaps as soon as tomorrow.
Majority opinion from those who responded to our admittedly morbid e-mail poll on the subject is that death will visit Shannon, the poor little rich girl played by Maggie Grace. As Shannon's brother, Boone, was killed off last season, that's a lot of bad news for one family, but it's a reasonable guess.
"I think she is going to die at the hands of one of the Others, sacrificing herself to save Sayid. Aaah, Shannon finds the meaning of true love at last!" predicts Pauline Kawamata.
About 50 Losties rushed in their predictions over just a few days last week, stating who they thought would die and how it would happen. Shannon was the overwhelming top pick, at 17 votes, with many citing the visions she's been having lately as an indicator that death looms.
As for the killer, sentiment is divided equally between the mysterious and deadly Others, who have been wreaking havoc pretty much willy-nilly to date, and the ultra-macho Ana Lucia, a new character played by Michelle Rodriguez.
One vote came in for Kate as the killer, in an accident: "It will be over Sawyer. ... A little hanky-panky jealousy here?" wrote Ann Ruby.
Two votes also went to the wackadoo French wild woman Danielle Rousseau (Mira Furlan).
The guesser who comes closest to the actual death scenario wins a Dharma Institute T-shirt (if you don't know what the Dharma Institute is, you're not watching as closely as these Losties).
For what it's worth, the only one of the major characters not to get at least one death vote was the heroic and studly Jack (Matthew Fox). Someone's got to lead this motley crew, after all.
CLAIRE
One vote for the death of the new mommy, in an elaborate prediction from Joshua Agsalud that has her catching the sickness that turns her into one of the Others. For the good of all, Shannon shoots her.
HURLEY OR CHARLIE
Despite the comic relief these two provide, some are pessimistic about their chances. Two votes to Hurley: David Shimokawa thinks he'll fall asleep while manning the Dharma computer, fail to enter the numbers and "end up like a mad dog." One vote to Charlie, who'll supposedly die protecting Claire.
ANA LUCIA
One vote for this very new character, a survivor from the tail section of the plane -- also known as a "tailie." Another vote went to a second newcomer from the tail section, Libby (Cynthia Watros).
SAWYER
Only one vote for Danger Boy, even though he's already wounded, having been shot in the arm at the start of the season. AND even though he's been without medical treatment and dragged through the dirt a lot.
SAYID
Two votes for the intrepid Iraqi, with David Roeca coming up with this scenario: "He will be carrying something electric and will be killed by the electromagnet when someone forgets to execute 4 8 15 16 23 42."
THE KWONS
Three votes for husband Jin; one for wife Sun. High on the prurient-interest scale is Clyde Pound's guess that Jin will be killed "so Michael can get it on with his wife." Daniel Dae Kim is taking lessons to speak English with a Korean accent, so if Jin dies, he'd be speaking from The Beyond, which is quite possible with this show.
MICHAEL & FAMILY
Collectively, Michael, son Walt and Walt's dog, Vincent, drew 15 votes (one person picked the dog). Popular thinking is that the Others will do the deed, although Rose Varvel thinks that it will be Sawyer, with a gun or a knife.
LOCKE OR KATE
One vote for Kate; two for Locke. When it comes to Locke, two intriguing predictions: "His lack of fear and reason will be his downfall," writes Theresa Crighton. "He'll probably die saving the doctor, so that doctor can go on feeling guilty," says Gigi Glover.
