Party perfect
For low-stress and no-mess, the best place for a birthday is any place but home
The house is a mess, the pizza is burning in the oven and the guests are restless. A child's birthday party can be a frenzied affair of spilled punch and chaos as parents scatter, trying to provide entertainment and maintain order.
Pick a place
Considerations in choosing a site for a birthday party:
Cost: An average party will run $200 to $400 and can go higher depending on what you are seeking and number of guests.
Outside food: Some places will allow you to bring your own food or at least the cake, which saves a few dollars.
Capacity: Be clear on how many children can attend or if there is a minimum number that you must guarantee. Is there a separate charge for adult chaperones?
Time limits: Do you have to clear out by a certain time?
Extras: Do they provide decorations or invitations?

For a no-stress, no-mess solution, move the party out of the house. Many establishments offer birthday-party packages, suitable for personalities from young jock to princess.
The concept can appear pricey at first, but an elaborate in-home party could easily add up to just as much. Hiring entertainment, such as a clown or magician, starts at about $175 -- throw in the meal, a bounce house or other amenities and the advantages of an outside establishment might well seem worth the price.
"One of the best parts is that parents can show up and we take care of everything," said Laura McVaney, owner of Leapin' Lizards, one of the island's newer party places.
Outdoor party adventures can be found at the Honolulu Zoo, Hawaii Nature Center, Sea Life Park, even aboard a glass-bottom boat. Girls can opt for a princess party where they'll be pampered for the afternoon. Celebrate at Mililani Consolidated Theaters, and the kids get a tour of the projection room. Glow-in-the-dark golf and jumping around the Tumblebus are other choices.
Leapin Lizards in Halawa Valley offers a 12,500-square-foot play area filled with inflatables such as a 24-foot slide and 40-foot obstacle course. A jousting area, boxing ring with oversize gloves and a volleyball court are other options. "When a husband and wife get into the boxing ring, it is a hoot," McVaney said.
The establishment is McVaney's retirement business, founded after 20 years as a manager for Xerox. "I regret not having children ... because I really wanted grandchildren. Now I'm a grandma to everyone," she said.
Adults like the place as well -- especially for guys in their 20s, she said. "They lose their minds and have a blast. We have booked a few 21st-birthday parties with adults only."
One party comprised four generations of women, said McVaney. "We had a 75-year-old lady go down the slide."
The cost of a two-hour children's private party is $224 Mondays through Thursdays; $295 on Fridays, weekends and holidays. The package includes 90 minutes of playtime for up to 25 children, 30 minutes in a party room, invitations, paper goods and a T-shirt for the birthday child. Pizza and drinks are extra. Six adults may attend free. Call 485-5327.
