WAHINE VOLLEYBALL
Wahine keep winning
BOISE, Idaho » Having an afternoon match yesterday with Boise State took the Hawaii women's volleyball team out of its normal game-day routine.
There was no time for a light practice or the usual two meals. However, the game-day outcome against the Broncos was what has become routine for the Rainbow Wahine.
No. 11 Hawaii needed only 90 minutes to sweep Boise State, 30-27, 30-21, 30-20, in front of 753 at Bronco Gym. The Wahine ran their Western Athletic Conference winning streak to 98 in improving to 13-6 overall and 7-0 in the WAC.
Senior middle Victoria Prince, playing in front of some two dozen family and friends, put down a team-high 13 kills and was in on eight of Hawaii's 11 blocks. Junior hitter Sarah Mason added 11 kills, sophomore middle Juliana Sanders had nine and sophomore hitter Tara Hittle eight in a balanced Wahine attack.
"Mason and our middles continue to lead us and do well," Hawaii coach Dave Shoji said. "And Hittle gave us the kind of game we need out of her.
"It was a little sluggish at times. We let (the Broncos) back into Game 1 with five service errors. But we settled down."
Giving the Wahine the most trouble was junior middle Cameron Flunder, who had a match-high 16 kills. Freshman hitter Jeanette Jenkins added 10 for BSU (4-10, 0-7), which hit .160 to Hawaii's .390.
The Wahine jumped out quickly in Game 1, leading 14-5. The Broncos chipped away, helped by UH serving errors, to pull to within 21-20. But Boise State could get no closer than one, the last at 24-23. Prince and setter Kanoe Kamana'o teamed to stuff Telia Peterson to cap a 3-0 run that put the Wahine ahead 27-23.
The Broncos rallied to within 29-27 before a hitting error gave Hawaii the win. Boise State found success early in Game 2, going ahead at 6-5, only to see the Wahine use a 10-3 run to take the lead for good at 15-9.
Hawaii's lead expanded to 21-13, capped by Susie Boogaard's first of two aces. Prince's ninth kill ended Game 2.
Game 3 again saw Boise State lead early at 10-9 and again saw Hawaii use a sizable run -- this one 13-4 -- to pull away for good. Boogaard's second ace came during her 6-0 serving spurt that gave the Wahine a 22-14 margin.
Hawaii closed it out with an 8-6 run, with freshman Jamie Houston ending the match on a solo block of Flunder.
Boogaard finished with only four kills, but had a team-high 10 digs.
"Susie's doing a lot of things for us, doing what we ask of her," Shoji said. "She's not getting a lot of swings (just six attempts) but she's doing the job we want with her defense and serving.
"It was a good overall win for us. We were able to use all (12) of our players. We need to continue to work hard and keep getting better."
Hawaii will put its seven-match winning streak on the line against Utah State on Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center. It will be the first time the Wahine have seen the Aggies since surviving in five last November in Logan, a match in which Hawaii dropped the first two games.
Last night, Utah State (13-8, 5-2) fell to host Nevada 30-22, 24-30, 30-26, 30-26. The Wolf Pack improved to 12-6, 7-1, a half-game behind the Wahine.
The team was scheduled to return today. The Wahine usually have the Monday following a road trip off, but Shoji said that preparation for Utah State may include a practice tomorrow.
Hawaii hosts San Jose State on Saturday.
