‘The Fish’ wins book of year award

Winners of the 2005 Ka Palapala Po'okela book awards were announced last night in a ceremony at the Honolulu Civic Center.
The awards from the Hawai'i Book Publishers Association recognize the top books published in the last year.
The Samuel M. Kamakau trophy for Hawai'i Book of the Year went to Kamehameha Schools Press for "The Fish and Their Gifts/Nâ Makana a Nâ I'a," written in English by Joshua Kaiponohea Stender and translated into Hawaiian by the Kamehameha Schools staff. Stender and the nine illustrators produced the book work while students in Kanu o ka 'Aina New Century Public Charter School in Waimea on the Big Island.
The John Dominis Holt Award for lifetime contribution to local publishing when to historian Gavan Daws, author of the classic "Shoal of Time."
