A triathlete sported the look of a champion yesterday morning while emerging from the shadows of the bike transition into the morning sun during the JAL Honolulu ITU Triathlon World Championships in Waikiki. About 2,000 age-group competitors from more than 20 countries participated in the race. The event had a staggered start, with the best competitors beginning the 1.5-mile swim portion at 6 a.m. off Queen's Beach. After the triathletes got out of the water, they mounted their bicycles at Kapiolani Park for the 40-kilometer down-and-back course to Hawaii Kai. The triathletes dismounted from their bicycles for the run portion around Kapiolani Park and along Kalakaua Avenue just past the Duke Kahanamoku statue.

The first athlete to cross the finish line was French athlete Yannide Bourseauz. Though not first overall because of staggered starts, Bourseauz came in first in the AWAD (athletes with a disability) division yesterday morning during the JAL Honolulu ITU Triathlon World Championships in Waikiki.
