WARRIOR FOOTBALL
UH special teams without a coordinator
Mouse Davis has the title, but all the coaches share the responsibilities; no changes planned
Boise State scored 16 second-half points as a direct cause of Hawaii kicking-game woes in the Warriors' 44-41 loss Saturday at Aloha Stadium.
But replacing the UH special teams coach is not an option.
That's because there is no Hawaii special teams coach.
The Warriors' staff shares in the duties of preparing the kickoff, punt, field goal and their respective return units. Running backs coach Mouse Davis is technically the coordinator, but that is an administrative title, head coach June Jones said.
"He puts together the meetings," Jones said. "But we spread (the responsibility) out. It's all of us."
Defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville has a big hand in the special teams, with several other assistants also involved. But Jones said there is no on-field coordinator or coach in charge of special teams overall.
"That's the way we've always done it," he said. "Even last year."
He said the Warriors spend more time on special teams practice, "than any place I've been before."
"Most do just 20 minutes on Friday," he said.
Jones said yesterday he plans no major changes to special teams -- other than improvement in execution.
The final blow Saturday was an extra-point attempt by UH with 3:03 left that would've tied the game at 42, but was instead blocked by BSU and returned for two points and the final 44-41 score.
Other special-teams breakdowns:
» Third quarter, 5:16: Boise State punt returner Quinton Jones caught a 49-yard punt and returned it 92 yards for a touchdown, giving the Broncos their first lead of the game, 21-20.
» Third quarter, 1:00: Kyle Stringer, the BSU punter, dropped a snap, but recovered and ran down the sideline for 13 yards and a first down, extending a drive that ended with Jared Zabransky throwing a 6-yard touchdown pass to Legedu Naanee, tying the score at 28.
» Fourth quarter, 11:23: Daryn Colledge blocked a field-goal attempt by Hawaii's Dan Kelly and Orlando Scandrick returned it 69 yards for a touchdown and a 35-28 lead.
Stringer's first down was especially frustrating for UH and a defense that didn't allow the Broncos to score a point in the first half. Jones said Stringer was able to get the first down because of a missed assignment.
"That's not a freak play. We were on 'punt safe.' If that happens, you tackle him because you keep inside shoulder. We lost contain," he said.
The kick blocks were shared errors, Jones said.
"They got pressure up the middle two or three times and a low kick. It's a combination, not any one person," Jones said.
Offensive line coach Wes Suan is responsible for providing the linemen who block on field goals and extra points. He said the group of left tight end Tala Esera, left tackle Kahai LaCount, left guard Mike Lafaele, snapper Tanuvasa Moe, right guard Keith Ah-Soon, right tackle Hercules Satele and right tight end Brandon Eaton will remain the same.
"They got pressure up the middle, but I think it's fixable with the group we have in there," said Suan, who planned to review tape of the plays yesterday.
Jones also said he didn't think there would be any immediate personnel changes.
"I would probably say not. But we'll look at it closer. The same guys have been doing it for basically as long as I've been here. On that particular day they didn't get the job done."
One player who is new at his position for UH is kicker Dan Kelly, a true freshman.
Jones on other topics yesterday:
» Quarterback Colt Brennan threw for 426 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Brennan made many big plays, but he and Jones were both critical of the inconsistency of the performance in postgame comments.
"He will do a lot better," Jones said yesterday. "I thought it'd be four or five games before he got it all figured out. He will probably be one of the best once he gets things figured out."
» Slotback Ryan Grice-Mullen caught nine passes for 188 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
"Every game he's a little bit more confident," Jones said. "He's a great kid who tries to be perfect. He just needed to turn it loose. Sometimes you just need to go play. He's a good athlete, smart, everything. He's got the tools."
» Wide receiver Jordan Slye made his debut with two catches for 29 yards.
"He did what we asked of him," Jones said of the 6-foot-4 Washington transfer. "The game's not too big for him. With Ian (injured starting receiver Sample) gone, we knew we had some things we needed him to do (as a backup to freshman Mike Washington)."
» Center Derek Fa'avi (bruised hand) and cornerback Ryan Keomaka (shoulder) left the game with injuries.
"Derek went back in the game, but we probably won't know about Ryan for a few days," Jones said.
» Hawaii lost despite outgaining Boise State 556 yards to 430, and 114 UH yards came via the running game.
"Our offensive line played the best, most physical game I've seen them play, and the best assignment-wise since I've been here. They played hard and physical. It was awesome to see," Jones said.
» The Warriors, 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference, play at Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
"I'm disappointed we lost that game, but we're right where I thought we'd be," Jones said. "We have to steal one on the road. I'm real proud of our defense. We out-physicaled Boise on both sides of the ball. The defense is learning how to play together. Jerry's done a great job. The kids are lucky to have an opportunity to play for a coach like him."
