Police seek robber who
fled in Mazda sports car

Honolulu police are looking for witnesses to an armed robbery of Hawaiian Holy Smokes, a cigar store in McCully.

A masked gunman entered the store on the second floor of 2239 S. King St., next to Old Stadium Park, about 9 p.m. on Sept. 20, approached the cashier and demanded money, police said.

The cashier told police the robber had a handgun. She said he was wearing a blue bandanna partially covering his face, a black tank top and a black backpack.

Police said the robber exited the store with an undisclosed amount of money and fled in a vehicle on South King Street.

The cashier said the vehicle was a black Mazda MX6 sport coupe with dark tinted windows and oxidized paint on the hood. She told police the license plate begins JDZ.

The description does not match any registered vehicles, so it is possible the license plate belongs to another vehicle, or the witness may have gotten the license plate letters transposed or wrong, said Detective Kim Capllonch, Honolulu CrimeStoppers coordinator.

But the cashier was certain about the type of car.

"She said she was going to buy one," Capllonch said.

Mazda manufactured the MX6 for model years 1988-97.

The robber is believed to be 18 to 20 years old, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8, and very thin, about 100 pounds. He has black hair in a crew cut and a tan complexion with pock marks and acne.

Anyone with information about this person is asked to call Honolulu police or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME by cellular telephone.
