Roosevelt marks 75th year
Roosevelt High marks its 75th year with a dinner Nov. 8 at the Hilton Coral Ballroom that will honor four of its educators as well as distinguished alumni. Educators singled out are the late Edmund "Ticky" Vasconcellos, who was also a winning football coach, Juliette Nosse, Maydeen Minami and Ann Todd. The distinguished alums are Judge Karen Ahn, the late John Bellinger, Buzzy Hong, Maggie Inouye, Danny Kaleikini, Bert T. Kobayashi Jr., Malcolm Koga, Bill Kwon, Mike Lum, Lynne Madden, Judge Marie Milks, Larry Price and Dr. Benjamin Young. As a RHS grad, I feel that leaving former state Supreme Court Chief Justice and ex-Lt. Gov. William Richardson, and ex-U.S. Congressman and former Lt. Gov. Tom Gill off the list are glaring omissions. The dinner is a fund-raiser to renovate the school's athletic field and track. The field is also used as the home field for McKinley and Farrington. The National Football League will match funds raised at the event up to $200,000 from its fund to improve fields for young athletes. The money will be added to $4 million the Legislature has appropriated for the athletic field renovation. Event co-chairs are Sen. Carol Fukunaga and Milks. Their second chairs are Sharon Brown, Carolyn Luke, Gary Okamoto, Al Tomonari and Kobayashi. They are assisted by about 45 vice-chairpersons. Dinner tickets are $200, $150 tax deductible. For more ticket info call Grace Poei, 535-5601. |
