Common draws
well at Pipeline

Despite the lack of support from hip-hop fans, promoters are still making efforts to bring some big names to Honolulu.

Public Enemy, Redman and DJ Kool Herc didn't draw the crowds I'd expected, so it was refreshing to see a strong turnout on Saturday for Common at Pipeline Cafe. There was a steady line outside until 9:30 p.m. when the Chicago rapper went onstage, with the Tiki Lounge upstairs packed with VIP ticket-holders -- and even his parents!

The biggest announcement came when co-promoter Rick Rock said that De La Soul will play here on Nov. 12. Looks like Royal Entertainment's Devon Bradly has the hookup to some quality East Coast artists, and I'm told he's in talks to bring a few more big names here before the end of 2005 ...

OTHER SHOWS to let you know about: Tickets are available for a Nov. 19 performance by D.L. Hughley at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The comedian is known for his network series, "The Hughleys," and for starring with Steve Harvey, Bernie Mac and Cedric the Entertainer in "The Original Kings of Comedy." Tickets are $35 and $45 in advance, available at all Ticketmaster outlets ... And $25 presale tickets go on sale this week for the "Rocktober Festival" on Oct. 7 at the Waikiki Shell. It will be the second stop of a four-island tour that also includes Kauai, the Big Island and Maui. Among the acts scheduled: Junior Reid, Tori Alamaze, Shinehead, former Expose member Gioia Bruno and Hawaii's own Sashamon ...

CONGRATS TO Todd Shimabuku, Ryan Arakaki, Jun Jo and the rest of the gang from In4mation. The homegrown clothing store hit the big time, opening a second shop on Sept. 15 in the Waikiki Shopping Plaza to go with the original Ward Warehouse location.

Sharing the same stretch of sidewalk as Louis Vuitton, Armani and Guess, In4mation carries brands like Situation Normal, Fresh Jive, Milkcrate and Addict ...

AND THE latest sign that mixed martial arts is growing in popularity: ICON Sport (formerly known as Superbrawl) now has its own radio show. Every Monday at 9 a.m. on KKEA-FM, ICON's T. Jay Thompson and Patrick Freitas host the program; Niko Vitale and Jason "Mayhem" Miller were this week's guests ...
