"Kanaka"
By Tom Koppel
(Whitecap Books, $16)

"Kanaka" is the story of how and why many Hawaiians left the islands for the much colder climate of British Columbia and Washington state during the 19th Century. These "kanakas" (the Hawaiian word for "human beings) carved out a living in the scattered communities along the Pacific Northwest, including Vancouver and the Gulf Islands. The author lives on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia.

"Faeries' Dance, Cupid's Dream"
By J. Campbell Self
(IUniverse $13.95)

Honolulu writer J. Campbell Self tackles the humor-fiction market with his new paperback, "Faeries' Dance, Cupid's Dream." The story revolves around Mort, a freshman at a junior college in Southern California who wants to become a film director. The book is written in a lighthearted and witty style, and should appeal to its target audience of twentysomethings in its tone and settings.
