UH SOCCER

Hawaii plays
Butler even

Coach Pinsoom Tenzing had his full lineup back on the field for the first time since the season opener. But it didn't result in a victory.

Although the Rainbow Wahine played better, especially with their passing and being first to the ball, they wound up with their second tie of the season.

The Wahine and Butler Bulldogs traded goals within a 70-second span in the first half that led to a 1-1 score after 110 minutes in the opener of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Shootout at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park Stadium before 650 fans.

"That's as well as we can play, but injuries continue to haunt us," Tenzing said. "You can see the difference when we have our central midfielders (Gabina Bohlman and Jessica Domingo)."

The injury hex struck another starter at 37:02.

Adria Campbell, making a run on the right just outside the box, went down as her shot was deflected out of bounds. She was helped off the field by the trainers and did not return to the lineup. She has a sprained left ankle.

The Wahine (2-4-2) controlled the tempo of the game for the first 10 minutes with excellent passing and ball movement, although no scoring opportunities resulted.

The Bulldogs (4-4-1) put the first shot on goal at 10:19, a lazy floater that presented no problem for UH goalkeeper Kori Lu.

Natasha Kai, making her first start this year, pushed a ball past Butler goalkeeper Annalise Larkin, but defender Julie Backscheider covered and forced Kai to shoot wide at 12:16.

Moments later Campbell sent a well-placed chip shot that Kai headed past Larkin toward the open goal only to have Backscheider clear the ball away from the goal line to the left just in time.

The Bulldogs made good on their second attempt on goal. Kristin Harnest took a pass from Ashley Twehues inside the penalty box on the left and sent a low shot on the ground past a charging Lu at 26:52.

Hawaii responded quickly at 28:02 to tie the score at 1-1.

Kelly McCloskey fed a ball to Kai 7 yards off the line inside the box by the right post. Kai, with her back to the goal and defended closely, back passed to Bohlman, who guided the ball inside the left post from 13 yards away.

The second-half action was back-and-forth between the 18-yard lines for long periods of time. Bohlman and Taryn Fukuroku had chances early in the half for UH, but their shots were off the mark.

Larkin received help from the right post at 71:16. McCloskey delivered a perfect cross from the right corner to Kai's head, but the senior striker's shot rebounded off the post and was cleared.

The Bulldogs' Meredith Buemi raced around the defense on the right side at 83:11 and blasted a grounder from 12 yards away that Lu saved with a diving stop.

The teams managed one shot apiece in the first overtime. Kai got three off for UH in the second extra period, but were on goal.

Hawaii outshot Butler 20-7, but only seven Wahine attempts were on goal.

"We will be able to finish. Natasha hasn't played in two weeks and she hasn't had a chance to work with another striker for any length of time. That's where we were going to put Adria," Tenzing said.

"It was good to have everyone back. They got a good workout, played quality soccer and I'm not disappointed with the tie."
