HMSA clinics to start giving flu shotsFree flu shots will be available for HMSA, HMSA 65C Plus and HMSA QUEST members 18 or older at Hawaii Medical Service Association community clinics during the next two months."The good news: There seems to be an adequate supply of vaccine this year," said Chuck Marshall, HMSA spokesman. "The bad news: Don't go to just any community clinic because you may end up paying for your shot unnecessarily." HMSA members should look for HMSA signs at clinics to get the shot at no cost, he said. Nonmembers may get immunized for $25. There will be no charge for Medicare Part B beneficiaries. ISI Health Enhancement Services, an HMSA subsidiary, will conduct the clinics, with the first one from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Friday at the Senior's Fair, Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall. Vaccinations also will be offered from 8:30 a.m., to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Seniors' Fair. Flu shots and pneumococcal shots will be provided at the HMSA booth at the Senior's Fair. Only flu shots will be provided at the other community clinics. The best prevention for flu is to get vaccinated each year because it is a respiratory illness caused by a virus and antibiotics don't help, HMSA says. Flu shots are recommended for people 65 and older, residents of long-term care facilities, workers providing direct care to patients, pregnant women, children ages six to 23 months, caregivers of children under six months old and people with chronic conditions such as heart or lung problems, kidney disease, diabetes, asthma, cancer or HIV/AIDS. People who are allergic to eggs, who have had a severe reaction to a flu shot in the past or have Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare form of nerve damage, should not get a flu shot. Shots also shouldn't be given to children under six months old or to anyone with a fever. Forty million Americans develop flu each year and nearly 40,000 die from it or related complications, HMSA officials noted. For the latest information on an HMSA flu shot clinic, visit www.HMSA.com or call 211. Other clinics will be held on:
