Bahai Faith sponsors U.N. day of peace

The United Nations International Day of Peace will be observed in a public program Wednesday sponsored by members of the Bahai Faith.

The program will include a parade of participants in international costumes, music and dance. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Honolulu Bahai Center (2165 10th Ave.). Refreshments will be served. It is free and open to the public.

Lecturer addresses U.S. economic policies

A critic of U.S. economic policies will be the guest lecturer at the Church of the Crossroads' annual Watada Lecture on Peace, Justice and the Environment.

David C. Korten, whose books "When Corporations Rule the World" and "The Post Corporate World" are required reading for some university economics students, will speak in a two-part lecture at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 and 27 on the theme "The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community." The talks in the sanctuary at 1212 University Ave. are free and open to the public.

Korten was formerly a professor at the Harvard University graduate school of business, Asia regional advisor to the U.S. Agency for International Development and a Ford Foundation program specialist in Manila. He founded Yes! magazine. He is a founder of the People Centered Development Forum, which works to educate people about the effects of U.S. economic policies on other countries and the global economy, and to urge change in U.S. policies.

The lecture series honors the late Umematsu Watada, who worked with the YMCA for more than 30 years, retiring as director of the metropolitan YMCA, and his wife, Yasu, a retired public school teacher. It was endowed by David and Kathy Watada Wurfel.
