Fourth crash victim identified

Big Island police officers have identified the last of four victims killed Saturday in a motor vehicle/tractor-trailer crash on Route 190 in North Kona.

The passenger was identified as Cheryl M. Turner, 42, of a Naalehu address.

Kona patrol officers said a 1992 four-door Honda sedan, being operated by Alfredo Flores, was traveling south on Route 190 when it crossed the center line and collided with a 2005 International tractor-trailer traveling north. The driver of the tractor-trailer attempted to avoid the collision by driving onto the right shoulder.

Three male occupants of the Honda and a female passenger were killed and pronounced dead at the Kona Community Hospital.

Two passengers in the Honda were identified as Jaime Villamil Cortes, 30 and Nabor Rosas Hernandez, 33, of Kailua-Kona. The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified as Kyle Fujimoto, 50, of Hilo, who was treated for minor injuries and released.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash.

A standard negligent-homicide investigation has been started, and autopsies have been ordered.

NORTH SHORE

Police arrest suspect in burning of tent

Police arrested a 38-year-old homeless man after he allegedly set fire to the tent of another homeless man at Haleiwa Beach Park on Wednesday.

The suspect and victim were arguing, then left the park, police said. The suspect returned later at 1:11 p.m. and allegedly set the victim's tent on fire.

A city fire crew put out the fire. The tent and several trees were damaged, police said. Police found a witness who saw the suspect light the fire and then arrested him for investigation of second-degree criminal property damage.
