NOHEA GALLERY
Glass octopus by Jennifer Umphress is available at Nohea Gallery.

Maui artist offers octopus in glass

Sea shells and glass floats evoke an ocean-inspired feeling. So does an octopus, but who'd think of bringing one home for a display shelf?

Maui glass artist Jennifer Umphress makes you think otherwise with her latest offerings at Nohea Gallery. Each piece has its own shape of twists and turns, therefore its own "personality."

The amber one at left, 9 to 11 inches in diameter, costs $350. Smaller ones (starting at about 3- 1/2 inches in diameter), without suction cups, cost less.

Umphress, who started working with glass in 2000, says she enjoys recreating the beauty of nature, especially the ocean, as her husband fishes and dives. Her work has been featured at Nohea Gallery at Ward Centre and Ward Warehouse since 2004.
