AN EXCELLENT "CELEBRATION": Bill Medley, third from left, relaxed backstage with Honolulu Symphony Pops conductor Matt Catingub, left, Candy Chase and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann Friday after his concert with the symphony in the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Medley delivered an excellent performance in a show billed as a "celebration" of the music of the Righteous Brothers and his musical partnership with the late Bobby Hatfield. The duo was seen performing in several vintage video clips. Highlights included Medley's renditions of "Little Latin Lupe Lu," "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," "Unchained Melody" and his show-closing gospel/blues version of "Higher and Higher." Chase, his bass player, sang Jennifer Warnes' part on "I've Had the Time of My Life." Hannemann sang with the symphony before intermission.

CONGRATULATIONS, SHANGHAI BISTRO: Star-Bulletin president and publisher Dennis Francis, left, talked with MidWeek's ace three-dot columnist, Eddie Sherman, Friday at Shanghai Bistro. Sherman did a great job as the emcee of the banquet celebrating the restaurant's first anniversary and showed he still has a knack for old-time stand up comedy. Proceeds benefitted the Palolo Chinese Home.

JUSTIN GOES "SMART": Partymaster Justin Yoshino teamed up with Amy Alston, left, Sarah Honda, and Molly Watanabe of SMART magazine in welcoming "the arrival of Fall" Friday with a late afternoon reception at the E&O Trading Company. Guests enjoyed cocktails and pupus, and received a copy of the fall issue.

NOT FOR FOLKS WHO SCARE EASY: Derin DeRego, right, gave "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" a conditional "thumbs up" after catching a preview showing with Kaleikina Akaka Aug. 30 at the Ward 16 Theatre. DeRego enjoyed it, but warns, "If you scare easy, and you value your sleep, you shouldn't see this movie."

She is Australian Minister of Veterans Affairs. Wells, a WWII vet, watched the Japanese surrender on Sept. 2, 1945.
