Natural beauty

Susan Middleton and David Liittschwager seem to have found a secret key to unlocking through the camera lens the glorious beauty of their subjects. In their breathtakingly gorgeous works, the wildlife photographers bring attention to the artistic beauty in the planet's plants and animals, often species so neglected by mankind's conscience that they are, sadly, endangered.

Several years ago, the duo had the art world abuzz with their book "Remains of a Rainbow," which focused on endangered species of the main Hawaiian islands.

This time, they return with another book, "Archipelago: A Photographic Expedition through the Northwest Hawaiian Islands." Some 80 photographs from the book are on display through Sept. 30 at the Academy Art Center.

The art center is located at 1111 Victoria St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Call 532-8741 or 532-8700.

Also, Middleton and Liittschwager will be in town Thursday at the Hanauma Bay Education Programto talk about their book. Their lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. in the bay's education center theater. Admission is free.
