The Bloomberg / Star-Bulletin Index is a price-weighted index designed to measure the performance of Hawaii-based companies. The index was developed with a base value of 100 as of December 31, 1999. A chart of the index which shows the weekly performance of its members is published weekly in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
Energy stocks rise
Energy-related stocks Hoku Scientific Inc. and Barnwell Industries Inc. led the way in the Bloomberg Honolulu Star-Bulletin index this week, when the devastating force of Katrina fueled a temporary spike in oil prices.
Hoku Scientific, a fuel-cell technology developer that is reporting fiscal first-quarter earnings on Wednesday, rose 10 percent to $6.60.
Barnwell, which has oil and natural gas operations in Alberta, Canada, was the second-best performer as it rose 8.5 percent to $60.72 after climbing as high as $67.50 on Wednesday.
