On Harrison Kam's first day back to school Wednesday since helping to win the Little League World Series, students swarmed his mother's vehicle at Mid-Pacific Institute.
"It was unexpected," his mother, Amy, said.
Yesterday, more than 400 middle-school students at the Manoa school clapped and cheered during an assembly to recognize eighth-grader Harrison.
"I feel very humbled," said Harrison, sitting next to his parents, Andy and Amy Kam of Ewa Beach. "I'm lucky that everybody is doing this for me."
Harrison is part of the Ewa Beach team that took home the Little League World Series title Sunday.
During the assembly, friend Cassidy Dunsmore said, "Harrison Kam sets an excellent example of perseverance, determination and hard work. ... Awesome job, Harrison."
Students greeted him with leis during and after the event.
"The kids played phenomenal," Amy Kam said.
Kam, who has been playing baseball since he was 8, thanked everyone for their cheers yesterday.
