Hawaii basketball player Julian Sensley said he received word that relatives living in New Orleans were safe from the flood that left most of the city under water in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Sensley said his father, Joseph, was able to contact family members who live in the area. His grandmother evacuated to Texas before the storm struck, while an aunt and her family stayed in New Orleans.
"He talked to them and everyone is OK," Sensley said.
Sensley, a senior forward with the Rainbow Warriors, lived in New Orleans for a time as a child and regularly visited his family there over the years. He said his mother, Susanne Karsten, lived there for seven years before moving to Hawaii. So viewing the images of the damage caused by the hurricane struck close to home.
"It's kind of hard, not just for my family's sake, but for everybody," he said. "It's hard knowing that everything everybody worked so hard for is gone."
