HPU names Ward athletic director

Hawaii Pacific University has named Jill Ward athletics director, effective today.

Ward, who served as interim athletics director following the May resignation of J.D. Barnett, had previously been associate athletics director for compliance and business administration at HPU. She had also been assistant director of membership services and associate director of membership services at the NCAA's national office.

She also earned a doctorate degree at Loyola University, where she was an assistant women's basketball coach.

McLachlin shoots a 61, leads mini-tour event

Punahou alumnus Parker McLachlin shot a second-round 61 yesterday to stand at 10 under and in a three-way tie for the lead at the Gateway Grey Goose Tour's Tournament 11 at Talking Stick Golf Course at Scottsdale, Ariz.

After shooting an even-par 70 on Tuesday to open the tournament, McLachlin's scorecard included 10 birdies yesterday.

The $118,000 purse (of which $18,500 goes to the winner) tournament runs through tomorrow. McLachlin is guaranteed a check after making yesterday's cut.

Hawaii juniors compete in Billabong Pro

The first day of the Billabong Junior Pro Hawaii ran yesterday, with 16 junior men and eight junior women advancing to the final day of competition. The junior men's third round and junior women's quarterfinals begin today at 8 a.m. at Kewalo Basin.

In 2-4 foot surf, Kekoa Bacalso posted a score of 17 points to win his third round heat, the highest mark of the day.

Seasiders beat Seattle in home opener

Brigham Young-Hawaii got a career-high 32 kills from Yu Chuan Weng and 27 more from Noelle Filimoeatu Tuesday night as the Seasiders won their home opener by beating Seattle 3-1.

BYUH is now 6-0 on the season after the 30-32, 32-30, 30-24, 30-22 women's volleyball win.

Weng's kill total ranks third all-time for a single-match effort by a BYUH player.

The Seasiders play next at Notre Dame de Namur Sept. 6.

State flying disc championships this weekend

The 11th Annual Hawaii State Flying Disc (Frisbee) Championships are set for Saturday and Sunday at Sand Island Beach Park and Keehi Lagoon Beach Park.

Disc golf and accuracy will take place Saturday at Sand Island, with distance and double disc court events taking place Sunday at Keehi Lagoon.

Jones takes silver in figure skating showcase

Honolulu resident Jennifer Jones won a silver medal in duets and a bronze in singles at the U.S. Showcase National Figure Skating Championships held. Aug. 11-13 in Valencia, Calif.

Jones competed in the showcase despite suffering a cracked rib in training the previous week.
