Arkin to conduct workshops
in creativity, improv at UH

Alan Arkin, a veteran of stage, screen ("Catch-22") and TV, is scheduled to return as an instructor for Pacific New Media at UH-Manoa's Outreach College this fall. Arkin will conduct workshops in "Creativity and Improvisation: The Power of Group Dynamics," Oct. 1 and 2, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Krauss 012 (Yukiyoshi Room), $250 fee. Arkin was also a founder of Second City improvisational group. He is giving a free public talk, "Bridging the Chasm from Theater to Life," Sept. 30, 7 p.m., in the same location. Former Star-Bulletin Webmaster Blaine Fergerstrom, now education webmaster for Kamehameha Schools, is another workshop instructor. Blaine is teaching "Build Your First Webpage" Sept. 18 and Nov. 13, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Manoa MultiMedia Lab, $80 fee. Call 956-8400 to register for workshops ...

Hats off to the gutsy Ewa Beach Little Leaguers, a well-coached, never-say-die team with an abundance of heart, for their terrific season climaxed by a thrilling 7-6 victory over Curacao to win the Little League World Series ... Mihana Souza comes up with a 'Dream' CD

Singer Mihana Souza slipped me an advance copy of her "One Little Dream" CD before her Thursday night gig at Duc's Bistro. Mihana is at her best on the recording. It would have made her late mom, isle music legend Irmgard Aluli, proud. Mihana wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on the CD, however, the album's title song, "One Little Dream," was written by her mother. The love song is one of Irmgard's classics. Mihana does it justice, bigtime. I like all of the songs on the CD but "Dream" and "Chucky," an upbeat number Mihana wrote for her husband, are my favorites. Pops, country, jazz and Hawaiian numbers are in this collection. And Mihana's haunting album cover photo, with her long ehu fire hair flowing freely, is a dream. It makes me think of what a daughter of volcano goddess Pele would look like. Mihana has one Hoku award on her shelf, "Dream" should bring her more ...
