HONOLULU
SUV collision kills motorcycle rider

A 20-year-old woman died Saturday after she was thrown from a motorcycle that crashed with a sport utility vehicle near the Honolulu Airport onramp.

Police said the victim was a passenger on a black Honda motorcycle operated by a 23-year-old man. They were traveling east on the H-1 viaduct at high speed in the southernmost lane about 10:55 p.m.

The SUV was driven by a 19-year-old man who attempted to change lanes into the same lane as the motorcycle, police said. The motorcycle could not avoid the SUV and rear-ended it. At impact the motorcycle flipped through the air, throwing off the driver and passenger.

Police said the female motorcycle passenger died at the scene from major head trauma. The 23-year-old man was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

The SUV driver and his 18-year-old passenger were not injured, police said. It was unknown if the motorcycle riders were wearing helmets, police said.

This is the 58th traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared with 45 at the same time last year.
