Menehunes upset
D-II champs

Moanalua learns to trust its coach,
and it pays off with a decisive
victory over Campbell

Arnold Martinez spent much of his first two seasons as head coach at Moanalua trying to get his players to believe in their potential.

And after two seasons of growing pains, the Menehunes justified their coach's confidence last night with a 20-7 victory over defending state Division II champion Campbell.

"We don't have a lot of guys, but our guys play with heart and they play with love," Martinez said after the game.

"We're not surprised. We know we play for each other, we know how to execute -- that's all we have to do."

Moanalua quarterback Stanford Leti completed seven of 12 passes for 117 yards and ran for 56 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Menehunes to victory in their Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference opener at Mililani High School's field.

The Menehune defense did its part by holding Campbell's vaunted running attack to 114 yards and intercepting three passes, with senior safety JD Baba coming down with two picks.

"This was big; it opens up new windows for us," Baba said. "Our coaches did an excellent job of scouting them. They knew their whole playbook in and out."

Moanalua (2-0, 1-0 OIA White) had 37 players available for last night's game, many of whom were sophomores on the varsity when Martinez took over. But the Menehunes made a statement to open conference play after defeating OIA Red West member Pearl City in a nonleague game last week.

"I think all the teams watching (on TV) are going to think different about Moanalua," Leti said.

Campbell (1-1, 0-1 OIA White) was hampered by the loss of running back Isiah Smith, who left the game in the first half with a knee injury. Smith carried the ball just four times for 20 yards last night, and Campbell coach Tumoana Kenessey said he may miss a significant portion of the season.

"It's a big loss," Kenessey said, "and it's going to be big later in the season."

Campbell miscues helped Moanalua take a 13-0 lead into halftime.

The Menehunes' first possession of the game was extended when Jordan Monico recovered a muffed punt at the Campbell 34. Moanalua's option attack took seven plays to reach the end zone and the Menehunes went ahead on a 1-yard dive by Landon Watanabe.

Moanalua extended its lead in the second period as an interception by Baba and Leti's 39-yard pass completion to Jim Mateo led to a Leti quarterback sneak for a touchdown.

The Moanalua defense limited Campbell's ground attack to 60 yards in the first half.

"They didn't do anything different that we didn't see," Kenessey said. "They executed well and we just didn't capitalize on the opportunities that we had."

After a scoreless third quarter, Moanalua tightened its grip with a nine-play drive capped by Leti's 4-yard scoring run around the right side to give the Menehunes a 20-0 lead with 8:43 left.

Campbell finally got its offense in gear in the fourth quarter and got on the scoreboard on Bronson Ellis-Rivera's 22-yard touchdown run at the 4:21 mark.

Moanalua recovered the squib kick and played keep away for the remainder of the game, thanks in part to a Campbell penalty on fourth and 3, and punctuated the landmark win with Jarin Salvador-Atabay's 47-yard score on a fake punt.
