Arctic Refuge Film FestThe Arctic Refuge Film Festival, Monday at the state Capitol Auditorium, will offer a selection of films that showcase native cultures and the unique arctic environment.Viewings are free. Among films to be screened is "Being Caribou," an account by filmmaker Leanne Wilson and wildlife biologist Karsten Heuer of their five-month trek following a caribou herd from Canada to Alaska and back. They took with them a 15-inch doll of President Bush so that they might symbolically show him the plight of the endangered animals. Also on view: "Oil on Ice," a documentary connecting U.S. energy and transportation policies with the fate of arctic wildlife, and "In the Light of Reverence," about American Indian struggles to protect sacred sites. A Native Alaskan Panel will be held near the end of the festival, moderated by Charles Burrows. Participating will be several leaders and residents from Alaskan communities, including Rosemary Ahtuangaruak, mayor of Nuiqsut; Robert Thompson, a wilderness guide and subsistence hunter; and Mike Williams of the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council.
